Here Kitty Kitty

Fishing Time: 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Weather: Hot, clear skies, high 90's, got windy at night
Water Temp: 70-72 degrees
Who Went: JJ, Ed, Me
We went out to Utah Lake for what was to be an all night catfest, until the bugs changed our plans. We got there at 5:00 p.m. and launched out of Provo Boat Harbor, heading straight for Mud Lake. We fished quite a few areas in Mud Lake but couldn't find any kitty cats that were hungry enough to bite. So, we moved to where the Spanish Fork River comes into the lake and again the same luck there. I was not going to be denied today as I have had a rough time finding Channel Cats this year so we made the jaunt out to Bird Island where I usually have success. Bird Island was a little harder to find this year with the water so high there wasn't much of an island left. It's scary though cause you know there is an island just below the water.
We spent a half hour trying to find the right spot to fish until we found an area that had a lot of humps and dips. This seemed like the perfect structure for catfish to hide in so we threw anchor. I rigged one pole with weight and carp meat and sent it to the bottom and then one with a bobber and shrimp. Shortly after both poles were out I had my first hit on the carp meat. I set the hook and the ride began. I could tell it was a good fish and was excited when we landed this guy.
The Belly on him was huge and he weighed in at 7 pounds. Not more than 3 minutes after putting this one in the livewell I looked out and couldn't see my bobber. I looked down and my line was tight so I grabbed my pole and fish on. It was another good fight and this one was just under 7 pounds.
I rigged up another shrimp on my bobber and threw out in the same spot and within 30 seconds I caught another carbon copy of this one. Then it was JJ's turn, he had on a good Channel Cat, but unfortunately it decided to pull him into the rocks and snag him up breaking his line. The action was hot for a few minutes and then out of nowhere the wind kicked up and broke our anchor loose. We drifted out of our money hole and the fishing died. I tried to get us back to where we were but the wind wouldn't let us anchor there. It got a little crazy for a minute with the wind blowing not being able to anchor and the boat kept drifting into dangerously shallow water. It was just about dark and the wind was bad enough that I made an executive decision to head for the harbor as it is a pretty good clip from Bird Island to the Provo Boat Harbor. I thought we could just fish the dikes at the harbor all night and leave when we got tired. Bad Idea! Of course the wind died just as we got to the harbor and made me realize why wind is not such a bad thing. It keeps the bugs away! They were out in full force! It was to the point where you couldn't open your mouth without enjoying a bug dinner. We called it a night and got out of there. We didn't have a whole lot of success but the three I caught right in a row were all really nice fish.

Good Times With Family

Fishing Time: 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Weather: sunny and breezy, 90's
Water Temp: 65-67 degrees
Who Went: Cari, John, Linda, Me
Cari finally found time in her busy schedule to come fishing this weekend so we planned an all day trip to Yuba Reservoir. The day before we left I talked to my father in-law and he told me that there was a kids for cancer charity walleye and bass tournament going on up at Starvation Reservoir. John and Linda were both going up there as John's company Marine Max was sponsoring the tournament. We changed our plans and headed to Starvation. We didn't fish the tournament cause it was $250 dollars a head. We got there around 8:00 a.m. to find no parking, and a very busy marina due to the tournament. We finally got it figured out and were on the water at 9:00. I headed over to Saleratus Wash to see if we could locate any Walleye only to find 20 boats in the spot I wanted to try! This seemed to be the way the story went for the first part of the morning, every point and cut was filled with tournament boats. I finally found a good cove where I have done well for smallmouth in the past straight across from the main boat ramp. Cari let me do the fishing as she decided to get a cold Pepsi and lay out on the back of the boat and soak up some rays. I started out throwing a roboworm rigged drop shot and soon landed this feisty smallmouth. Shortly after I landed the biggest smallie of the day with a nice 2 pounder. This fish got Cari pretty excited and now she was wanting in on some of the action. I rigged her up drop shot style and put on a live earthworm and within 5 minutes she had on her own smallmouth, but she wanted to take a picture with the big fish instead.
The color on this fish was awesome! It was now pushing 12:00 p.m. so we headed back to the marina to meet up with John and Linda so they could get on the boat and go for a ride! On our way back to the marina we saw this little speed boat going mach 1 across the main bay and throwing water behind it for what seemed like a mile.
We picked up John and Linda from the docks and off we went in search of some more smallies. They really liked our new boat and were excited to finally get out on it with us. They enjoyed the day and relaxed in the shade under the bimini top!We fished for another hour catching a few here and there and then headed back in to see how the tournament fisherman did at the weigh in. We relaxed under the pavilion and looked at all the prizes for the winners. The fisherman had some decent bass but nothing to get to excited about. We loaded the boat, cleaned it up and headed for Mapleton for the Duncan Family Reunion. We drove down Indian Canyon merging into highway 6 and the scenery was absolutely gorgeous. We snapped a few photos but only this one came out okay.

Chasin Kitties

Fishing Time: 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Weather: Hot, low 90's
Water Temp: 65-68 degrees
Who Went: Scotty, JJ, Me

With the success we had last week at Utah lake we went back for round two this weekend. This time Scotty wanted in on some of the action! We went prepared for an all day catfish bonanza. First we stopped off at the sewer treatment plant outlet to see if the White Bass were still there. JJ managed to pull one in, but that was it. We moved on, in search of some monster channel cats! I have never really fished the north end of Utah Lake for catfish, only the south end around Lincoln Beach and Bird Island. We moved many times with no success, until we ended up right back at the same place we began, the sewer plant outlet. Here we found many kitties that wanted to bite! Problem was that they were all Mud Cats. Not exactly what we were looking for, but still made for a good time. Scotty was just happy to start catching fish! We all started pulling in cats but it was JJ that had the hot hand today. He had non stop action for about 3 hours throwing right along the mud line, including this double up with Scotty.
Once the action died off we moved to the east side of the dike going into AF Boat Harbor. The water was real murky here and we weren't getting any bites. Then JJ's bobber all of the sudden went missing, we were shocked when he pulled in this dinky little Largemouth Bass. He was using a chunk of the White Bass he caught earlier for bait. It caught us all by surprise since I have never caught a Largemouth out of Utah Lake other than in the tributaries. Once the excitement wore off from finally seeing a Largemouth caught out of Utah Lake we started realizing how hot it was! We packed up and got out of there. It was the busiest I have ever seen the AF Boat Harbor! I guess that's what happens on the first Saturday of the year in the 90's!

A Change At The I-80 Pond

Fishing Time: 7:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Weather: high 80's, clear
Who Went: Me

I had Friday off this week and it was well needed with work being very slow at Parsons. I decided to make the most of my day and headed out bright and early to the I-80 Pond. I started by throwing the old reliable using a roboworm on a drop shot set up. I have noticed a big change from this year compared to last. Last year I caught tons of bass out of the pond, usually up to 20 a trip. This year the catch rate has went way down, but the average size has went way up. Last year I would catch about 18 dinks (6-12 inches) and 2 nice bass. I caught 7 bass today and only one was under 2 pounds with the biggest at 3. I will gladly take the new pond over the old one as catching 6 inch bass is not what I'm looking for! I don't know whether the big bass had a baby bass feast, or if the little ones just aren't liking what I'm offering. Either way is fine with me! The first bass I caught today had a small bass fry in his mouth, so I changed my offering from a roboworm to a gulp minnow in pearl white. It proved to be a good move as I started landing bass more often. All the bass today were a carbon copy of the others. Then I found this guy tucked back in a little shaded inlet full of thick reeds. He was the big boy of the day coming in at 3 pounds. He was the same length as the others but had a full belly. If this change sticks at the I-80 Pond it may make for fewer bass to catch, but man the possibilities on size are endless!

White Bass Time

Fishing Time: 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Weather: Windy, 60's
Water Temp: 65 degrees
Who Went: JJ, Dave, Me
The rumor was that the White Bass are in the spawn, which means easy pickings for anglers casting around the tributaries of Utah Lake. We decided to check it out for ourselves tonight, but got a late start with JJ working til 6 p.m. Dave and I got everything ready and picked him up from work right as he walked out the door. We were on the lake in good time, but the wind at Utah Lake decided to make it rough on us. We headed over to the Battle Creek Tributary, but could not anchor up due to the big waves bobbing up and down. So, we moved and went over to the sewer treatment plant outlet and the wind was not quite as bad. We anchored up and then it was on! We instantly started putting White Bass in the boat! They weren't the biggest bass I have seen but they were a lot of fun! Dave and JJ had a blast catching fish every other cast, as they have never experienced getting into White Bass like that! I screwed up taking Dave's picture as the wind blew my camera strap right into the photo, but it was my only picture of him so I put it in anyway!

We used one of the bass and cut him up for bait, as JJ wanted to try for some catfish. We had many blown opportunities as his bobber would go down but we were to busy reeling in White Bass to notice. That is until Jaws decided to hit and took his bobber down to never come up again. I saw it just as it happened and screamed at JJ. He grabbed his pole and the fight began. The fish took a few runs making it so that we couldn't see him, but we all figured it was a big ole cat. We finally got the net on him and JJ was thrilled as this is the biggest fish he has ever caught. A 5 and a half pound Utah Lake Channel Cat! He held it up proud for a pic!He ended up catching one more small mud cat, but other than that it was all White Bass. We must have caught close to a hundred and could have caught more if we took it more serious. As it was getting dark the sunset was absolutely gorgeous, so I will leave you with these pics. What a fun trip, and finally Dave and JJ have a good time with success fishing on the boat!
