Fishing with Cousins at Utah Lake

Fishing Time: 8:30 am to 1:00 pm

Weather: Sunny, Warm, T-80s

Moon Phase:  85% Moon

Location: Utah Lake (AF Boat Harbor)

Best Bait: curly tail grub (1/8 oz jig head)

Who Went: Devin, Addison, Dayton, Alex, Sam, Bobber John, Anthony, Dunc

My kids wanted a fishing trip with cousins, so we sent out an invite and my boat ended up full of little eager fishermen.  My buddy John joined us in his boat with his boy Anthony and it’s a good thing he did.  I’m not sure my boat could have handled that many hooks flying around in such a small space.  Devin and his cousin Alex jumped on Bobber John’s boat with Anthony.  My boat had Addi, Dayton, and Sam.

We tried our catfish honey hole first, but I think we were a bit early in the year for fast action.  The kids wanted faster fishing, so with Bobber behind me, we motored over to the sewer outlet to see if the white bass were still there.  The white bass were still there, but this time we had to battle for position.  There must have been 5-6 boats jockeying for position near the outlet.

We forced our way in and all the kids immediately started catching white bass.  Dayton put on a clinic, but hooked my hat twice with his wild casting.  Sam is as calm a kid as they come and casted really well and was excited to catch a new species of fish.  Addi stayed in the back and caught a few then hung out with dad.  Alex and Devin caught quite a few over on John’s boat.  They kids a blast and hopefully we can do it again soon.

Journey for the Smallest Catfish

Fishing Time: 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm

Weather: Cloudy, Windy, T-70s

Moon Phase:  69% Moon

Location:  Cutler Reservoir

Best Bait: Worm and Bobber

Who Went: Devin, Addison, Dayton, Cari, Dunc

For months Devin has been waiting to catch a small catfish to keep in a tank in his room.  I told him that I usually catch some small ones at Lake Powell each spring, but with COVID-19 this year, Lake Powell was closed and we couldn’t go.  He has waited all winter to catch one and the other night on YouTube I saw a smallest catfish contest in Utah, and a guy was catching tiny bullhead catfish.  I looked at the date the video was posted, and it was only a couple days prior.  I pinpointed his location and we made a game plan.

The location was Cutler Reservoir, which is 2 hours away from our house, but I met Cari and the kids after work in Bountiful and we headed north, on a journey for the smallest catfish we could find.  We arrived too high winds, a storm brewing, and a giant garter snake…

We rigged up the rods and within no time the kids were catching tiny bullheads.  Of course, Addi and Dayton had to take one home too, so they are now living in our backyard pond.  Devin was beyond ecstatic and finally has his little catfish in a tank in his room.
