Cold Water Spring Fishing

Location: Mantua Reservoir

Fishing Time: 9:00 am to 3:00 pm

Weather: Sunny, calm in the morning but breezy in the afternoon.  T-60s

Moon Phase: 28% Moon

Water Temps: 49-51 degrees F

Best Bait: minnow or worm imitation on a drop shot rig

Who Went: Casey Davies, Dunc

My buddy Casey and I were looking for some spring action but were torn on where to go.  We flipped a coin for heading south or north.  North was the winner so we started at Willard Bay to see if any wiper or walleye wanted to play.  The weather was calm, but the water temps were cold at 49 degrees.  We saw some fish on the live scope, but they ran away from all our baits.

We decided to load up and head a bit further north to Mantua Reservoir.  The breeze was up at Mantua and the water temps were still cold at 51 degrees.  We started throwing the rock dike with no success before moving to deeper water in the middle of the lake.  We found a school of perch and small largemouth that kept us busy for a bit before we called it a day.  Spring fishing can be tough, but it was good to get the boat out and feel some sunshine.
