White Bass Time

Fishing Time: 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Weather: Windy, 60's
Water Temp: 65 degrees
Who Went: JJ, Dave, Me
The rumor was that the White Bass are in the spawn, which means easy pickings for anglers casting around the tributaries of Utah Lake. We decided to check it out for ourselves tonight, but got a late start with JJ working til 6 p.m. Dave and I got everything ready and picked him up from work right as he walked out the door. We were on the lake in good time, but the wind at Utah Lake decided to make it rough on us. We headed over to the Battle Creek Tributary, but could not anchor up due to the big waves bobbing up and down. So, we moved and went over to the sewer treatment plant outlet and the wind was not quite as bad. We anchored up and then it was on! We instantly started putting White Bass in the boat! They weren't the biggest bass I have seen but they were a lot of fun! Dave and JJ had a blast catching fish every other cast, as they have never experienced getting into White Bass like that! I screwed up taking Dave's picture as the wind blew my camera strap right into the photo, but it was my only picture of him so I put it in anyway!

We used one of the bass and cut him up for bait, as JJ wanted to try for some catfish. We had many blown opportunities as his bobber would go down but we were to busy reeling in White Bass to notice. That is until Jaws decided to hit and took his bobber down to never come up again. I saw it just as it happened and screamed at JJ. He grabbed his pole and the fight began. The fish took a few runs making it so that we couldn't see him, but we all figured it was a big ole cat. We finally got the net on him and JJ was thrilled as this is the biggest fish he has ever caught. A 5 and a half pound Utah Lake Channel Cat! He held it up proud for a pic!He ended up catching one more small mud cat, but other than that it was all White Bass. We must have caught close to a hundred and could have caught more if we took it more serious. As it was getting dark the sunset was absolutely gorgeous, so I will leave you with these pics. What a fun trip, and finally Dave and JJ have a good time with success fishing on the boat!
