Bass Fever!!!

Moon Phase:
Fishing Time: 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Weather: cool, windy, cloudy, 60's

With the nice weather we had at the end of March you would think that it would be a nice April. Wrong! April has brought storm after storm keeping the bass and the bass fisherman guessing when the spawn might begin. Well I got sick of waiting so I decided to go down to the I-80 ponds and test my luck. I put on a dark green sparkle Zoom Worm and rigged it drop shot wacky style as this picture shows to the right. This has always been my go to bait for the I-80 ponds. I fished it for about a half hour and had a few hits but they were all small as I could see them in the clear shallow pond. I finally got one of these little guys to hang on long enough to get him to shore. Then the wind started to blow and it became really difficult to know when something was hitting. I ended up with many fish on but didn't have much luck getting them in before they spit out my bait. I even had a few on topwater throwing a spook minnow and walking the dog. I couldn't get them to hang on either. Once the wind calmed down a bit I went back to the drop shot rig that has always treated me well here and I then Finally got something to hang on. I fought me left and then right, and then right into the bushes. I finally untangled him and was able to lip him and hang on. This was the biggest Largemouth to date for this year at around 2 pounds. He was a fat little guy. Once the temps steady for a few days in a row this place will be on fire. Can't wait for that day!

Strawberry ICE OFF!

Moon Phase:
Fishing Time: 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Weather: sunny, clear, 50's
It's one of the most popular times to fish Strawberry Reservoir. When the ice recedes back far enough to allow you to cast out to the edge, but not too far to where you can't reach the edge with a long cast. Something about these conditions seem to produce a lot of fish and some of the largest fish you will catch all year. So the conditions were almost perfect and we were there to take advantage of it. The only problem was that the fish didn't want to cooperate with the plan. We threw everything at them but the kitchen sink, with no success. Between me, JJ, and Ed, I managed to pull in the only fish of the day by drop shotting a gulp minnow in black shad color. This fish was one of the weirdest Cutthroats I have ever caught. I started reeling him in and it felt like I had on a log. There was no fight in him at all! Then once I got him about 4 feet from shore the life came out in him. He started reeling off line like he was an 8 pound bass. I would let him run and then get him about 4 feet from shore again and zzzzzzzzzst there goes my line. After about 4 of these I finally landed him and it was a nice 3.5 pound Cutt that was 22 inches long. I'm really upset about it to because I completely forgot to get a picture of this fighter. Ugh! So the only fish we caught all day and no picture to prove it! We ended the day by driving to the Soldier Creek side and finding no fish there either. We did get some good pics overlooking the Strawberry River, but the fishing was not what we expected.

Ice Free At Last!

Moon Phase:
Fishing Time: 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m
Weather: sunny, breezy, 60's
After a long wait, Jordanelle is ice free at last! We headed up to see if we could get in on the ice off action. Many times right after ice off, the fishing is hot! We loaded up JJ's boat and headed to the Rock Cliff Arm of Jordanelle. We had dreams of monster Brown Trout in our heads. We didn't quite find any of those big boys, but we did find lots of little guys that wanted to bite! We caught 1 small Brown and many small Rainbows. I started off throwing a drop shot rig with a gulp minnow in black shad color. I had two hits on this set up but no hook ups. I then tried throwing a Rapala X-rap with no success. JJ put on his favorite go to lure, the kastmaster, or as he calls it, the cashmaster! Soon after the cashmaster was in the water JJ had hooked up with a small rainbow. We all ended up putting on the cashmaster and thats when we all started catching fish. Ed shows off one that he caught in this picture. This was the maiden voyage for JJ's boat and I found that out the hard way. We started to get blown into some trees that stick up out of the water, so Ed started the motor to try to get us away from them. I was at the front of the boat and didn't realize Ed was starting the motor. The problem is that this motor only goes in one direction when started. Forward! Ed started the motor and I found out what trees taste like. I yelled, kill it! Kill it! The delayed reaction by Ed had the motor killed 4 seconds later after I was already neck deep into branches. Oh well whats a fishing trip without a little extra excitement!

A Good Day Off!

Moon Phase:
Fishing: Time: All Day
Weather: cool, cloudy, 50's

So I just landed a new job with Parsons Engineering working in their Environmental Group and I put my two weeks in with Amec! Yeah! I had some vacation built up with Amec and one of the days was a personal day and they don't pay it out when you leave so I said okay then I'm gonna use it! I decided to go on an all day fishing excursion all around the state starting with Yuba Reservoir. From there I would go wherever the wind blew me. I got up early and made it to Yuba just in time for a beautiful sunrise.
The lake was glass and looked beautiful on a crisp cool march morning. I had heard rumors that there were some big rainbows down at Yuba so here was my chance to find out. I started fishing just south of the dam along a rocky shoreline. I could see rainbows swimming the banks and they were about 16 to 17 inches long from what I could tell. The problem was I could not get them to take anything. I tried throwing spinners, Rapalas, jigs, and a drop shot with a live worm. The only thing I could get to hit were the aannoying Perch that infest Yuba. The Perch were good sized at about 12 to 13 inches but not worth the time. I hate Perch! So I moved on with my fishing adventure and left Yuba. On my drive out I got a good shot of a Golden Eagle that was hanging out in some big trees along the lake. I was trying to decide where to go and thought to myself "I know where I can catch some trout." I headed up Hobble Creek Canyon. I knew I could catch some fish there guaranteed. Luckily I came prepared with waders so I could walk up stream instead of fishing from the bank. The stream is gorgeous this time of year and just like I thought the fish were everywhere. They were all Brown Trout ranging from 8-14 inches, but they fought like they were much bigger. After playing with the Brownies for a few hours I figured it was time to continue on down the road in search of more fishies. Next stop Utah Lake. I went to the Lincoln Beach Boat Harbor in search of anything that might take a worm or chub. I fished on the south dike and threw in a worm on one pole and a chub on another and relaxed after a long adventurous day. No fish were hitting at Utah Lake so after an hour or so I called it a day. What better way to spend my last day off at Amec. I love it! (Lincoln Beach Boat Harbor)

Sometimes you find Out The Hard Way!

Moon Phase:
Fishing Time: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Weather: sunny, clear 60's

Sometimes an idea sounds great in your head but when you actually do it then it doesn't seem as good anymore. This is how my trip to Willard Bay from the shore went. I have never fished here before and had no idea where we were going, or where to fish at. The Dam was under repairs so the reservoir was really low. We picked the best area that we could from the shore but everything seemed shallow. I guess we were stuck hoping that a catfish might swim buy. We all had two poles in with a chub or a worm off the bottom. The only fish caught was by JJ with this trophy Mud Cat. What a waste of a good Saturday.

First Trip with no ice!

Moon Phase:
Fishing Time: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Weather: sunny, cold, 40's

Well its gotten really warm all of the sudden in early March so ice fishing just didn't sound like to much fun. So I grabbed the long pole and headed to Utah Lake where the ice has just melted. It was a beautiful day with no clouds in the sky. I wanted to see if I could get anything to bite. I forgot my brand new camera that I got for my birthday so no pics. Bummer! But I only managed to get one fish to play with me anyway. The fish that I did catch though surprised me for this time of year. It was a 14 inch Largemouth Bass. I caught it on a drop shot rig with a live worm. That is the earliest into the year I have ever caught a Largemouth before. Cool!

A Trip Worth Waiting For!

Moon Phase:
Fishing Time: 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Weather: sunny, clear, breezy, 30's
It was the trip I look forward to every year. Flaming Gorge through the ice! We usually only make it up there once every ice season due to the long drive, but I look forward to it every year. In the past we have always managed to pull in a few of the elusive Mackinaw we go there to target, but this year was going to be different. We just didn't know it yet! We geared up by going to Sportsmans Warehouse and loading up on our favorite Mac jigs and then we were off for a weekend at the Gorge! We stayed in a dingy motel in Green River Wyoming called the Flaming Gorge Motel. An early wake up call had us on the ice by 7:30 a.m. We had studied our maps the night before and tried to put ourselves right over a 50 foot hump in 65 feet of water. Using my fish finder to locate depths and with a little searching we found it. Now it was up to us to catch some fish. JJ was the first to drop a 7 inch Tora Tube Jig down to the bottom and with much surprise to me he was hit instantly! JJ landed the first Mac of the day with this 4 pound beauty!
Little did I know that this would be the start of the greatest Lake Trout fishing I have ever experienced in my life! JJ catching this fish was like waiving the dinner bell for all the others. We all started getting hits non stop for the rest of the morning! Dave would have one on and then me and then JJ and then even Ed got into the action, we all caught fish, it was awesome! Here is a picture of Dave with his personal best for the day weighing in at 4.5 pounds. We were fishing
with a variety of different tubes and jigs, but the one that worked best for me and ended up being what almost everyone else put on was a Storm 5 inch minnow in white. We then tipped it with a piece of minnow or chub. Half way through the day I pulled out what was to be the biggest fish of the trip coming in at 5 pounds and 25 inches long.

The middle of the day slowed down a bit but not much and then at about 2:00 it was back on again. I ended up catching 14 while Dave came in with 9 and JJ with 4. Ed even managed to pull in a couple as well as his buddy Jim that came along for the ride. These numbers only represent what actually came out of the ice hole but I probably had on as many as I caught and missed double that in hits. It was a Mac frenzy that day and we found the right spot. No big boys were pulled in but when your catching fish like that it doesn't really matter. The big boy can wait til next trip! We stayed all day until sunset and it was a gorgeous walk back to the trucks with smiles on our faces the whole way! Can't wait to get back up there!

Jordanelle Again!

I had a little time to spare on Thursday so JJ and I decided we might as well make a quick evening trip up to Jordanelle again. We got a late start and made it to the lake with about an hour and a half of day light left. We decided to walk out to the same spot we went last time, up against the big rock outcrop on the north side of the rock cliff arm Right around the buoys. The fish finder started blowing up as soon as I put it down my ice hole. We were fishing in 15 feet of water and there were fish at all depths. I made my first drop down with a small white tube jig tipped with a meal worm and BAM! First fish of the trip a Utah Sucker. Two seconds later JJ had one on and pulled in the first Rainbow of the trip. The hits continued and I pulled in my second fish. What do you know another sucker. Then JJ pulls in his second fish and what do you know it was a Rainbow. This continued until I had caught four suckers and JJ had three trout. We were fishing with the same baits and were only 10 ft. away from each other. What a weird trip! The worst part is that for our ice fishing tournament my friends and I do, suckers, carp, and chubs don't count! So Chris took home a big fat zero to put down on the fishing chart this trip. Oh well! Once it got dark we took off and we forgot the camera so no pics this trip.
